Co-Presented by Mr. Alan Franey, Festival Director of Vancouver International Film Festival 2009.
Based on a true story, The Days tells the cautionary tale between two young brothers involved in Singapore's young street gangs between 1989 and 1990. In a misguided effort to teach BABY independence and to make him feel protected, Zi Long brings him into his own gang of delinquents, introducing him to a dark world of drugs and violence.
Director’s Statement
“I was brought up in a traditional Chinese family and I’ve never expressed my feelings for any of my family members. But I do love my family very much – especially my younger brother, whom this film is dedicated to – as it is just never my style to say it out loud.
I’ve always wanted to write a story about our growing up years – the colourful side of Singapore during the turn of the decade in the late 1980’s and early 1990s. These were the days of the Generation-X – it was exciting being in a group then, there were things like tea-dance sessions, and of course, the troubles that we got into.
Thankfully I left that part of my life behind, but I regret having brought my own brother into this group – which he has never really left. He has recently gotten into more trouble, sadly, and landed himself in prison. He has since been released and has found some gainful employment, and is currently trying to find his way back into society. That was when I knew – I had to get my act together and make this film happen, so others would not follow in my misguided actions.
So even though it is still not my style to say that I love him (and I know that I may never will), I hope that in some way, this film will reach out to him and say that for me.”
