Director's Statement

Living alone in Singapore was an eye opening experience. As I wean off my dependency on my parents, I have concluded that ultimately, our future is decided by ourselves. There is a sense of isolation in this fact, like how the old couple live in 'islands' in an endless ocean in the film.

My eagerness to watch Asian TV Dramas, which mostly are about family and love, had a big impact to the theme of this movie. A simple movie of an old man and an old lady, with a fish that connect them together again. I like the idea that everybody is living alone in this world. I think it is a fact that at the end, we have to decide on our own lives. Especially when the chance comes, we have to make a choice.

The influence of some Asian Dramas I watched drove me to base the character design on Korean traditional dress, which I think will make it more interesting. Me and my teammates who made this movie together intended to portray the idea of loneliness in each of the old couple with the shipwreck and the jetty. We also used the boat as the symbol of empty heart of the old lady.

Everyday she filled it with junks that she fishes. But one day she found "The Fish and The Ring" which later lead her to one that can truely fill her heart forever. This is a cute and heart warming story.
