Madam Chan (陈嫂)

North American Premiere

Filled with endless gripes about her familial troubles, Madam Chan joins her friends the Wongs on a local senior citizens' tour of Singapore, uninvited and much to the annoyance of Mr Wong. As the group travels from one tourist spot to another, the truth behind Madam Chan’s complaints slowly emerges.

Director's Statement

Amidst the inevitable and sometimes unwelcome break-neck changes in our tiny city state of Singapore, there are still some things, good or bad, that remain the same – materialism, selfishness, friendship, filial piety, ignorance of the youth, the ever-widening social class gap, the neglecting of our aged and especially, the yearn for the good old days.

Despite having secured some funding for the film, production was put aside for almost a year due to other commitments. But when mid-2008 came around, I felt that I could not delay it any longer. The country was changing rapidly. The timing was right for me to document the city state before she changes too far beyond the emotional reach of its people – both young and old, myself included. And I am glad I did.

This film is inspired by what I see, and how I feel about Singapore these days. It examines and comments bluntly on contemporary life in this litte “red dot” (albeit on a more personal and intimate level) and its hot topics of the day. I hope you'll enjoy watching it as much as I have enjoyed making it.
