Vancouver, BC (August 14, 2009) – The 2nd Annual Vancouver Singapore Film Festival (VSFF) hits Vancity Theatre at the Vancouver International Film Centre over the Labour Day long weekend, with an exciting line-up of films in various genres and languages to showcase the tiny island-state's dynamic cinema scene.
Proudly supported by the Singapore Film Commission (notably the first Singapore film festival in Canada to achieve this status), the two-day event will include Opening Day festivities such as a Lion Dance, music performances, as well as lunch consisting of Singaporean hawker-style favourites to tickle the palates of audiences.
Opening Day will be an all-day event with a selection of short films followed by a feature film. Shorts will include the critically-acclaimed Madam Chan, the world premiere of Man in a Snow Globe, and Nature on its Course, an award-winning animation produced by a Vancouver-based Singaporean. The feature film is the Canadian premiere of Boi Kwong’s action-packed The Days, a gangster tale reminiscent of Hong Kong classic The Young and The Dangerous.
Day Two will consist of two feature films - both North American premieres: 12 Lotus by Singapore cinema maverick Royston Tan (a MediaCorp Raintree Pictures production), and The Leap Years by Jean Yeo, starring bilingual Hollywood actress Joan Chen and Thai heartthrob Ananda Everingham (a MediaCorp Raintree Pictures and Ochre Pictures co-production).
The festival organizers aim to bring a little piece of Singapore to Canada through these film festivals, which also offer audiences the additional experience of Singapore’s unique culture, entertainment and food.
