Singapore Film Festival Hits Vancouver for Second Year

Vancouver, BC (August 4, 2009) – The Vancouver Singapore Film Festival (VSFF) hits downtown Vancouver over the Labour Day long weekend at Vancity Theatre at the Vancouver International Film Centre on September 5th and 6th.

Following a successful inaugural year with Vancouver Singapore Film Night in June 2008, VSFF 2009 will comprise an exciting two-day event with Opening Day festivities such as a Lion Dance, music performances, and samplers of Singaporean cuisine.

A selection of films with genres ranging from animated to art house, action and drama will be screened over the two days. To showcase Singapore’s dynamic multicultural society, selected films will be in a variety of languages such as Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese and English. Amongst the line-up of features are the North American premiere of Jean Yeo’s The Leap Years and Boi Kwong’s The Days, while shorts will include the critically-acclaimed Madam Chan and the world premiere of Man in a Snow Globe, amongst others. Also to be included is an award-winning animated short Nature on its Course, by Vancouver-based Singaporean, Su-An Ng.

With the increasing quality and diversity of Singapore film productions over the recent years, the festival committee is optimistic that there is enough interest for this annual event to expand on a larger scale and eventually branch out to other major Canadian cities such as Calgary, Alberta. VSFF is in fact a spin-off of the Toronto Singapore Film Festival, which has held successful annual events since its inception in 2006. It is hoped that a Pan-Canadian Singapore Film Festival with joint events in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary may be established in the near future. The festival organizers aim to bring a little piece of Singapore to Canada through these film festivals, which also offer audiences the additional experience of Singapore’s unique culture, entertainment and food.
