Update in Line-up at Vancouver Singapore Film Festival

Vancouver, BC (September 2, 2009) – An update in the line-up of short films at the 2nd Annual Vancouver Singapore Film Festival, held at Vancity Theatre this Labour Day long weekend, has been announced.

One of the four shorts to be screened on Opening Day will be the Vancouver premiere of Ah Ma (‘grandmother’ in Chinese), a film that not only world-premiered at the 60th Cannes Film Festival but was also the first Singapore film to be in competition at the prestigious film festival. This film went on to win a Short Film Special Distinction award, and has been critically acclaimed for its poignant portrayal of a family coping with an impending death in the family.

The other shorts will include the North American premieres of the critically acclaimed Madam Chan and the animated Hush Baby, as well as the world premiere of Man in a Snow Globe.

The feature films will remain as previously announced. To be screened on Opening Day is Boi Kwong’s The Days, a cautionary tale revolving around youth in secret society gangs in Singapore. Day Two films will include Royston Tan’s 12 Lotus, a musical tragedy about a getai singer, and Jean Yeo’s The Leap Years (starring seasoned actors Joan Chen, Wong Li Lin, and Ananda Everingham), a love story based on a novella by best-selling author Dr. Catherine Lim (Singapore’s answer to Margaret Atwood). All are North American premieres.

Keeping with the festival slogan ‘Experience Singapore through Film, Culture & Celebration’, tickets to Opening Day will also include lunch with Singapore hawker dishes, door gifts, music performances and a Lion Dance.
